At Christ Church United Methodist, we are Christians who are excited to be part of the United Methodist Church. We believe that we are part of something bigger, part of the worldwide 'Body of Christ'.
Please see below for more information about what Christ Church is all about.
We affirm and nourish the centrality of Jesus as Lord and Savior for all people. We seek to change our part of the world by inviting all persons, irrespective of race, creed or color, to experience the saving faith of Jesus and the love of the Christ Church family.
Inviting people to come see who Christ is and what he is all about so that they can make a decision.
Jesus took one look up and said, "You're John's son, Simon? From now on your name is Cephas" (or Peter which means "Rock"). (John 1:40-42)
Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah? They came out of the town and made their way toward him. (John 4:28-30)
Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” (John 4:28-30)
Building up the Body of Christ so that we can carry out his mission.
So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Eph 4:11-13)
He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. (Mark 16:15)
He told them, "You don't get to know the time. Timing is the Father's business. What you'll get is the Holy Spirit. And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the world." (Acts 1:8)
Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: "God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in threefold name: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I'll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:19)
United Methodists are the second largest Protestant denomination in America. We are the home to both President George W. Bush, as well as President Clinton’s family when he was in the White House. Methodists have played a significant role in shaping our nation, and especially the State and Republic of Texas. The oldest Methodist Church in Texas is First Methodist in Houston which began in 1836. Texas and the Houston is home to some of the Largest United Methodist Churches in the World including Windsor Village UMC, St. Luke’s UMC, Houston, First and Memorial Drive UMC, just to name a few.
United Methodists hold to the historic doctrines of the Christian faith. We are evangelical, but moderates rather than fundamentalists. We value the intellect and modern science, while at the same time looking to the Bible as the authoritative guide for faith and practice. Methodists have a passionate faith with strong convictions, but we also recognize that the world is not always black and white. We are willing to ask questions, to wrestle with difficult issues, and to do so with grace and compassion.
Methodists have been known for our emphasis on a personal faith, lived out in concrete ways in the world. We have historically valued well-informed and passionate preaching, worship that was lively, and small groups where people could grow in faith.
Methodists have open hearts, and open minds--and welcome anyone interested in learning more about the Christian faith.
The Texas Annual Conference is one of the eleven annual (regional) conferences in the South Central Jurisdiction of the UMC. The conference is comprised of 700 congregations organized into 9 districts across East Texas.
